Stella Burns writes torch songs that walk a fine line between lo-fi Morricone, raw folk, and a '50s dreamscape that feels both intimate and bruised. He started out with Hollowblue in 2004, putting out three albums before going solo. His first gig as Stella Burns was in some small theater in Paris in 2011—the kind of place where shadows and silence do half the talking. Since then, he’s dropped three albums, an EP paying tribute to Bowie, and a handful of singles.

The guy’s got range, and people noticed it. David Bowie’s official website gave him a nod, he snagged a win at the 3D Hollywood Film Festival, and he’s worked with names both local and international. His music isn’t easy to pin down—it’s personal, rough around the edges, and full of soul. The critics love it, both in Italy and abroad.

His latest album, Long Walks in the Dark, hit the streets on January 26, and it’s packed with heavy hitters: Mick Harvey (Nick Cave's right-hand man), Ken Stringfellow (R.E.M., The Posies), Marianna D’ama (from Timber Timbre’s live band), and even American writer Dan Fante.

This time around, Burns is stripping it back to the bone: just his voice, a guitar, and a reel-to-reel tape recorder. Pure, raw, and real—just the way it should be.

Here’s what some of the folks who know a thing or two have to say:

MICK HARVEY
Enigmatic, compelling, always charming. When Stella Burns asked me to guest on the album…I had no hesitation.

JOEY BURNS/CALEXICO
With each repeated listen to Stella Burns’ “Long Walks In The Dark” I am pulled in by the magic of his voice and the neon glow these songs paint much like a series of nocturnes with simple and soulful arrangements. I’m reminded of artists like Lou Reed, Elliott Smith and Bill Callahan who captivate a space and create evocative depth and vibe with their stories and voices. There’s a lot of beauty, tenderness and strength in the performances with just the right amount of variety of sounds to keep each song alluring and intriguing. The song “Satellite” has a wonderful build and flows effortlessly into the great wide open offering a guiding light and hope through these dark times.

UMBERTO MARIA GIARDINI
