Not Just Labels: inside the minds behind the brands - Volume 02

Nick Wetta is the founder and creative force behind West Major, a Phoenix based menswear label with the mission of reviving the classic Western shirt aesthetic, inspired by vintage rock icons who popularized pearl‑snap shirts.
Nick Wetta's journey is one of passion-infused entrepreneurship. Combining his love for music, vintage fashion, and hands-on design, he’s carved out a niche for West Major, producing rugged, stylish, and thoughtfully crafted Western wear that speaks to both Americana and modern sensibilities.
To date, West Major is selling thousands of high quality, U.S.A. made, western shirts all over the world and continue to grow every year.
TRS - If West Major had a soundtrack, what genre would dominate — and who’s headlining?
NW - This is tough! If we could pick one record, it would be ‘Rajan', by a band called the Night Beats (I would have them headline as well). If we had to pick one overall genre, it would probably be Psych-Rock with some Blues and Western mixed in.
TRS - What's the most surprisingly touching message you’ve received from a customer?
NW - That’s a tough one too. I don’t know if I have one specific - any time I get a positive review or feedback, it truly makes my day. And makes all the pain and suffering worth it haha. A recent one I got, that was awesome: "Best western snap shirts around in my opinion. Everything, design, quality, cut, customer service, is spot on. And made in USA. Worth every penny!” - Billy Kerr
TRS - What part of launching West Major felt like jumping off a cliff (in the best or worst way)?
NW - There have been many jump off a cliff moments. The first one, was probably when I decided to go for it. I left a career in the entertainment industry, I was on a good trajectory there - and if I had stayed in it - would have continued to rise through the ranks, get better job titles, more pay, etc. But I left, to do this, got a job as a barback, launched my website, and put all of the money I had saved throughout my 20’s into making a large batch of shirts and starting the brand.
After that, it was moving back into my mom's house, to save money and really go all-in. That was in 2020. Since then, there have still been many smaller jump off a cliff moments, that still continues to this day. Each level of growth, presents new risks and moments I have to bet on myself.
TRS - What's one fashion or business rule you delight in breaking?
NW - Well, I don’t have a background in fashion… so whatever rules exist, I wouldn’t know them (I’m sure I am breaking some regularly). But I would say for me, it’s probably around the idea of making western shirts in the U.S. The vast majority of brands don’t, and many people in the industry over the years have told me it wasn’t possible, and to not do it, and that it’s a bad idea. And yet, I am and have since 2018 - when I completed my first production.
TRS - If you could design an outfit for any moment in history, which would it be and why?
NW - I’m a huge music fan, and it was music that really sparked my interest in western wear. One of my favorite musicians of all time is George Harrison. So I’d say, I’d love to design an outfit for him. Maybe in the late 60’s, when they were really taking over the world. I also think it would be cool to make an outfit for my grandpa - who is no longer around. And I never really got to know him. But if I could go back in time, meet him as an adult, and design an outfit for him, that would be incredible.
TRS - What was the “you really made it” moment — big or small — that you'll never forget?
NW - Well... I still don’t feel like I’ve “made it” haha. It’s still very hard, still work 7 days a week. But there have been some big moments. I would say Post Malone wearing my shirt last year, both at a festival he played, and in one of the music videos for his new album F1 Trillion. That was pretty surreal. As it all happened organically. Also, getting into Rugged Society was another moment. And I’m not just saying that because you’re asking! You guys are the first store in Europe to carry my brand. And you carry some other very special, well known brands. So to get into a store like yours, in an incredible city like Milan, was a big moment for me too.
TRS - If aliens landed and asked to see one piece that defines West Major, what are you showing them?
NW - Probably my Desert Dobby shirt. The overall aesthetic, look and feel of that shirt represents the brand and direction I want to continue to take it. And I think they would like it, and it might be my best chance of staying on their good side and not getting killed.
TRS - What's the weirdest place one of your products has ever ended up?
NW - There haven’t really been any weird places yet.. that I’m at least aware of. I’m sure there’s some floating around somewhere though.
TRS - Who’s on your dream collab list — even if it’s totally unrealistic?
NW - Leon Bridges would be at the top. He’s one of my favorite artists, and his style is on another level.
