The good people at Freenote have interpreted the classic industrial shirt, that old uniform of mechanics, garage philosophers, and men who once fixed carburetors instead of passwords. They looked back to the 1950s, when a shirt was not ironic. It was simply there to absorb sweat and endure Tuesday.
The Dayton carries a camp collar, relaxed but not lazy. It has two pockets. The buttons are metal reproductions from Japan, small and cool to the touch. The fabric is a custom seven ounce yarn dyed stripe, also from Japan. Sturdy. Durable. Comfortable. Three virtues we once applied to people as well as cloth.
The stitches are precise, an eighth of an inch double needle detail marching along the seams like disciplined ants. The cotton is one hundred percent. The shirt is sewn in America. It has been rinsed and pre shrunk, which is more preparation than most of us receive before entering adulthood.
