Rugged Books: Ranchland - Wagonhound
“… Krantz delivers a true sense of not only the size and scope of Art and Catherine Nicholas’ Wagonhound Ranch, but also the deep sense of stewardship the Nicholas family and their crew bring to ranching every day.” — Western Horseman
Wagonhound, an historic ranch stretching over 300,000 wild Wyoming acres, where the altitude dances between 5,000 and 9,000 feet. Here, the air is thin, and the horses are strong – damn good quarter horses from the ranch's own remuda. These beasts and the cowboys ride through the jagged landscape, a place that doesn't forgive weakness. Catherine and Art Nicholas took over this storied land in '99, and they hold it like a sacred duty – keeping the old ways alive, nurturing the land's deep veins of history, and making it whole again.
Anouk Krantz's "Ranchland: Wagonhound" peels back the dust and grit to show us the ranch's heartbeat. Her lens captures the relentless grind and the fleeting beauty of cowboy life – men and women rising before the sun and working past its fall, driving cattle, branding hides, and breaking the finest damn horses this side of the Mississippi. This oversized book isn't just pages – it's a testament, a raw and reverent look at the pulse of the American West, where tradition and the harsh land shape every soul who dares to call it home.
Anouk Masson Krantz, a lens wielder born and bred in France, took the leap across the pond in the late '90s and landed in the chaos of New York City. After a stint at Cartier’s North American headquarters, she dove into the world of photography at the International Center of Photography. She's got a knack for turning the wild and untamed into art. Her eyes have wandered over the Wild Horses of Cumberland Island in '17, the rugged lives in West: The American Cowboy in '19, and the grit of American Cowboys in '21.
Her work, big and bold, whispers of elegance in its minimalism and has graced the walls of galleries and museums around the globe. Now, with Ranchland: Wagonhound, her fourth book, Anouk takes us deep into the soul of the American West. Her pictures don't just capture moments; they breathe life into the relentless grind and raw beauty of cowboy life, giving us a glimpse into the land and its keepers, stripped bare and honest.
