Rugged Style: Duck Canvas

Rugged Style: Duck Canvas

The term "duck" originates from the Dutch word "doek," referring to linen cloth, renowned for its resilience against water and fire. Initially used for sails and tents, its robustness led to wider applications, including clothing, and it soon became particularly favored by miners and laborers seeking durability and comfort.

During the mid-1800s, Mount Vernon Mill and similar establishments escalated duck canvas production, prompting its expansion beyond maritime uses. Notably, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis crafted their inaugural riveted jeans from duck canvas before transitioning to denim shortly thereafter.

Duck canvas, characterized by its tightly woven plain weave structure, employs two yarns in the warp and a single yarn in the weft, enhancing its endurance and weather resistance. Although initially stiff, it softens over time and with washing, while its smooth surface minimizes snagging and tearing, making it a versatile choice for various applications.
